Collection of five French and Italian notebooks : primarily Paris and Rome : autograph manuscript journals, 1858-1862 1858-1859.

Collection consists of five notebooks or journals kept by Hawthorne as he traveled with his family in Europe after his appointment as United States Consul in Liverpool, England, had ended. Entries describe daily activities and travels throughout France and, primarily, Italy, and record observations and encounters. Notebooks are described in five individual records (MA 587-591).
